CURP Brief: The Maker Movement, Exploring Ways to Grow Regional Economies

What's with all the craft fairs, material design and technology fabrication shops popping up in communities all over the US? The people and collectives that work with their hands to harness productive uses of materials and technology are collectively known as the Maker Movement.

Early findings show that fostering the Maker Movement (Making) has tangible benefits for regional economies including “resilient job” creation and greater production of locally made goods that reach local consumer markets and beyond.

How can decision-makers and philanthropy support this important and growing Maker sector of the US economy? Many practitioners and researchers believe that Place, Collaboration, Curriculum and Inclusiveness are all important considerations for fostering strong Maker Movements. In order to sustain Maker Movements, decision-makers may also look to use intermediary grant-making, grant pools, risk-taking capital, prize competitions, and asset mapping.
